Hanoi Airport to Halong Bay Transfer — Honest 2026
How to get from Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN) to Halong Bay in 2026 — direct shuttle, private car, public bus, or stop in Hanoi first. Real prices and times.
TL;DR: Halong Bay is 155 km from Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN), takes 2 h 30 min – 3 h by direct car via the new highway, 4 h+ by public bus. Most cruises include the transfer in the package — check before booking your own. If you’re going independently, private direct transfer with arrival fast track is the smoothest for a same-day cruise embarkation.
What you’re actually traveling to
“Halong Bay” can mean three different places in 2026 tourism marketing:
| Destination | Drive time from HAN | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Halong City (Bai Chay port) | 2 h 30 min | The traditional Halong Bay cruise port |
| Tuan Chau Marina | 2 h 45 min | Many premium cruises depart from here |
| Lan Ha Bay (Got pier, Cat Ba) | 3 h 30 min | The “less touristy” alternative, requires ferry transfer |
Most package cruises specify the pier — verify yours before booking transport.
Transfer options compared
1. Direct private transfer (recommended for cruise pax)
Pickup at T2 arrivals door, drop at the cruise port or hotel.
| Vehicle | Capacity | 2026 price (Hanoi airport → Halong) |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | 1–3 pax | 1,800,000–2,300,000 VND |
| Minivan (Hyundai Solati) | 1–9 pax | 2,800,000–3,500,000 VND |
| Limousine VIP minivan | 1–9 pax | 3,800,000–5,500,000 VND |
| Coach (15+ pax) | Up to 30 | Quote on request |
Door-to-door time: 2 h 30 min – 3 h depending on traffic.
We coordinate this with our arrival fast track — the agent walks you out of the terminal to the same driver, no second waiting.
2. Shared shuttle bus
Several operators run scheduled shared buses Hanoi airport → Halong:
| Operator | Price | Schedule | Drop-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halong Hop-On Shuttle | ~280,000 VND | 09:00, 13:00, 17:00 | Halong City + cruise piers |
| Sapaco / Hoang Long shuttle | ~250,000 VND | 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 | Halong City only |
| Cruise-specific shuttle | Included in cruise | Once daily, morning | Direct to cruise pier |
Travel time: 3–4 hours with stops.
If your cruise is the next day (typical), shared shuttle is fine. If your cruise embarks the same day at 12:00 noon and you land at 09:30, you need a private transfer or you’ll miss the embarkation.
3. Public bus
Two options:
| Route | Price | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HAN T2 → Hanoi city → Halong | 35,000 + 120,000 VND | 4–5 hours | Cheapest, two transfers |
| Pre-booked Hoang Long bus from HAN | ~150,000 VND | 3 h 30 min | Less reliable schedule |
Backpacker option. Not recommended with luggage, kids, or schedule pressure.
4. Stop in Hanoi first, transfer next day
This is what we actually recommend for most travellers:
- Land at HAN, transfer to a Hanoi hotel (~40 min, 350,000 VND).
- Sleep in Hanoi, see Old Quarter, eat well.
- Next morning, transfer to Halong by your cruise company’s included shuttle.
Why: long-haul jet lag + a 3-hour drive immediately after immigration is brutal. The “extra” day in Hanoi is genuinely a better trip.
Embarkation timing — the thing people get wrong
Halong Bay cruises embark between 12:00 and 12:30. Most pre-cruise welcome is at 11:30.
To make the embarkation:
- Need to be at the cruise port by 11:00 latest.
- That means leaving Hanoi airport area at 08:00.
- Which means landing by 06:30 at the absolute latest.
If your flight lands later than 06:30 and you want to embark a same-day cruise, you need:
- Arrival fast track (to clear immigration in 15 min vs 60+ min)
- Pre-booked direct private transfer (driver waiting at curb)
- Some buffer for delays
Without all three, missed embarkations are common. Cruise companies do not wait.
Visa-on-Arrival warning
If you’re using VOA and going straight to a Halong cruise, plan an extra 60–90 minutes for the VOA processing on top of normal immigration. The VOA-and-onward-cruise combination is the single most common “we missed the cruise” scenario we hear about.
Better: get a Vietnam e-visa in advance (USD 25, 3 working days lead time) and skip the VOA queue entirely.
What highways you’ll be on
New highway 2026: CT-04 Hanoi–Haiphong–Halong expressway. Fully tolled, well-paved, 110 km/h limit. The old route (QL-5 + QL-18) is now mostly used by trucks.
Tolls: approximately 350,000 VND each way for a private car (paid by driver, included in transfer fare).
Best driving conditions: weekdays during daylight. Avoid Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons (Hanoi weekenders returning).
Halong → Hanoi return
Easier than the inbound direction:
- Most cruises disembark 10:30–11:00.
- You’ll be in Hanoi by 14:00 if you have a private transfer; 15:30 by shuttle.
- Allow 5 hours minimum Halong disembark → HAN departure for international flights.
We’ve seen people book noon flights out of Hanoi after a 10:30 Halong disembark. It does not work. Reschedule.
Cruise companies that include transfers
Verify with your specific operator. As of 2026, these typically include door-to-door from Hanoi airport (or Hanoi hotels):
- Au Co Cruises
- Heritage Bình Chuẩn
- Paradise Elegance
- Indochina Sails
These typically include Hanoi hotel transfer but not airport transfer (so you need to overnight in Hanoi):
- Most “mid-range” cruise lines
Currency and tipping for the transfer
- Drivers expect tip: 50,000–100,000 VND per traveller is standard for premium service.
- USD accepted by some drivers but you’ll get a poor exchange. Carry VND.
- Toll booths only accept VND or ETC card; driver handles this.
Connectivity during the drive
- Mobile signal is good 100% of the route (4G/5G).
- Wi-Fi on most premium minivans.
- Charging ports on premium vehicles.
If you’re working during the drive, request a Wi-Fi-equipped minivan when you book.
When fast track is NOT worth it for Halong-bound travellers
- Your cruise is the next day, not same-day. You have plenty of time.
- You don’t have a tight schedule.
- You’re stopping in Hanoi first for 1+ nights.
For same-day cruise embarkations, fast track is almost always worth it.
Bottom line
For the average Halong-bound traveller, the best plan:
- Land at HAN, use arrival fast track (especially if peak hour).
- Pre-booked private transfer (~2,300,000 VND for a sedan, ~3,200,000 VND for a minivan).
- Direct to cruise port for same-day embarkation, OR Hanoi hotel for an overnight stop.
