What you actually get for the price
A reputable private transfer from HAN should include:
- Driver at the curb with a name sign at agreed time (not “we’ll send a driver, look for the green car”).

What you should NEVER pay
- More than 700,000 VND for sedan airport-to-Old Quarter unless it’s a luxury vehicle.
- Currency conversion at the curb (“USD 25 only sir”) — pre-quote in VND.
- “Tipping is mandatory” — tipping in Vietnam is optional, 50–100,000 VND for a good driver.
- “Card processing fee 5%” — not standard for legitimate operators.

- Hanoi Old Quarter: 270,000–380,000 VND.
- Hanoi suburbs: 320,000–450,000 VND.
Pros: cheapest legitimate option, app-based, no language friction. Cons: no name-sign greeting, can wait 5–15 min for the car, surge pricing 22:00–02:00.
Xanh SM is the electric-car ride app — cleaner, slightly more expensive than Grab, same booking flow.
Late-night transfer reality
Between 22:00 and 02:00 — peak arrival window at HAN — Grab/Be surge price 1.5–2.5x. The pre-booked transfer at a flat rate becomes the smart choice precisely when it’s “more expensive” on paper.
Example: Grab on a normal Tuesday at 14:00: 290,000 VND. Same Grab on Saturday at 23:30 (peak surge): 540,000 VND.

When a transfer is NOT needed
- You’re a confident traveller and have light luggage. Grab works fine for the city run.
- You have plenty of time (12:00 arrival, no schedule).
