Vietnam Airlines vs Bamboo at HAN — 2026

Vietnam Airlines vs Bamboo Airways vs Vietjet from Hanoi Noi Bai: ground service, lounges, check-in cut-offs, baggage handling, and which one we'd choose.

Vietnam Airlines vs Bamboo at HAN — 2026

TL;DR: Vietnam Airlines (VN) is the safest choice for international from HAN — best lounges, fastest priority check-in, most predictable. Bamboo Airways (QH) is genuinely good and often cheaper, but smaller network. Vietjet (VJ) is fine for domestic on a budget but skip it for international long-haul if you can.

The three carriers based at HAN

Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is the home hub for three Vietnamese carriers:

Airline IATA Type International routes Aircraft
Vietnam Airlines VN Full-service flag carrier 50+ destinations 787-9, A350, A321
Bamboo Airways QH Hybrid full-service 15+ international 787-9, A321neo
Vietjet Air VJ Low-cost 50+ international A321neo

At the airport: what’s actually different

Check-in counter experience

Vietnam Airlines:

  • Premium check-in at Aisles A–C (T2).
  • Business class counter usually has 1–3 pax ahead.
  • Economy can hit 30-min wait during peak departures.
  • Staff: bilingual, generally efficient.
  • Online check-in: works well, 24h–60 min before flight.

Bamboo Airways:

  • Counter at Aisles D–E.
  • Smaller fleet means smaller crowds — generally faster.
  • Staff: bilingual, friendly, well-trained.
  • Online check-in: works well, more reliable than Vietjet.

Vietjet:

  • Counter at Aisles G–H (sometimes pushed to F).
  • Notoriously long lines (30–60 min standard, longer for peak).
  • Strict baggage weight enforcement — they will charge you.
  • Online check-in: works but app is buggy.
  • Staff: tends to be more rule-following, less flexibility.

With departure fast track we use the priority lane for any airline regardless of cabin class. So the Vietjet check-in queue is less of a problem with fast track — but still painful if you’re solo.

Lounge access

Vietnam Airlines:

  • Has its own lounge: Lotus Lounge (Level 4, T2)
  • Free for business class, Gold/Platinum SkyTeam Elite Plus, and SkyTeam Elite on long-haul
  • Has 2 shower rooms, full buffet, sleep area

Bamboo Airways:

  • Has its own: BambooSky Lounge (covered in our HAN T2 lounges guide)
  • Free for business class, Bamboo Diamond/Gold/Platinum
  • Quirky vinyl room, no showers

Vietjet:

  • No own lounge.
  • Has paid access to Song Hong (sometimes).

Baggage handling

Airline Inbound baggage delivery (avg) Lost-bag rate (our observation)
Vietnam Airlines 18 min after wheels-down <1%
Bamboo Airways 22 min after wheels-down ~1%
Vietjet 28 min after wheels-down ~1.5%

Vietnam Airlines is consistently fastest on bag delivery at HAN.

On-time performance (2025 data)

Airline International on-time Domestic on-time
Vietnam Airlines 84% 81%
Bamboo Airways 79% 75%
Vietjet 71% 68%

Where each shines

Vietnam Airlines is the best for:

  • Long-haul international (Europe, US, Australia)
  • Family travel with kids
  • Anyone needing assistance (wheelchair, kids, elderly)
  • SkyTeam status holders
  • Connections within Vietnam to Da Nang / Phu Quoc / HCM
  • Predictability above all else

Bamboo Airways is the best for:

  • Premium experience at lower cost (their 787 business is genuinely good value)
  • Regional Asia (Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul)
  • Travellers who want a non-low-cost feel
  • Frequent Vietnam-internal flyers (loyalty program is generous)

Vietjet is the best for:

  • Cheap domestic only (Hanoi → Da Nang for USD 25)
  • Backpackers
  • Anyone who travels light, on time, with no special needs

Vietjet is the worst for:

  • International long-haul (their long-haul A330 is uncomfortable and often delayed)
  • Travellers with mobility / accessibility needs
  • Anyone with a tight onward connection (their delays cascade)

Our recommendation by route

Route Best choice Why
HAN → London Vietnam Airlines Direct, 787, reasonable price
HAN → Paris Vietnam Airlines Direct, codeshare with Air France
HAN → Frankfurt Vietnam Airlines Direct
HAN → Seoul Bamboo Airways Cheaper, 787
HAN → Tokyo Vietnam Airlines Frequency advantage
HAN → Bangkok Vietjet Cheap, short
HAN → Singapore Bamboo Airways Best mid-range
HAN → Sydney Vietnam Airlines Only direct
HAN → Da Nang Vietnam Airlines Most reliable
HAN → Phu Quoc Vietnam Airlines or Bamboo Either fine
HAN → Ho Chi Minh Any Heavy schedule, all reliable

What we tell our customers

When someone asks “should I fly Bamboo or Vietnam Airlines?”, our default answer is:

  • If price difference is >USD 50: Bamboo.
  • If price difference is <USD 50: Vietnam Airlines.
  • If you have any special need: Vietnam Airlines.

For Vietjet, we say: only if domestic, only if light bags, only if you have buffer time on either side.

Booking through OTAs vs direct

Skip the OTAs (Trip.com, Kiwi, etc.) for Vietnamese carriers. Issues with refunds and rebookings flow through the OTA, which adds 24–72 hours.

Direct airline booking:

  • Vietnam Airlines: vietnamairlines.com — straightforward.
  • Bamboo: bambooairways.com — works fine, app is good.
  • Vietjet: vietjetair.com — works but the website is dated and the app is buggy.

When to choose Vietnam’s flag carrier over the cheap option

Always: business or family travel, accessibility needs, connection flights, peak season (Tet), and anytime you can’t easily afford the cost of a same-day rebooking.

Sometimes: solo travel, regional Asia, flexible schedule.

Fast-track value differs by airline

The cost-benefit of departure fast track is highest with Vietjet (their economy check-in queue is the worst) and Bamboo (their business class line is fast anyway, so fast track adds less). Vietnam Airlines economy is OK but business class fast track is rarely needed.

Bottom line

For most international travellers flying out of Hanoi, Vietnam Airlines is the safe default. Bamboo is a great cheaper alternative when the schedule fits. Vietjet has its place for short domestic only.

Whatever you choose, departure fast track removes the variable that’s outside your control: the ground operation at HAN T2.
